Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has started the construction of the first LNG dual-fuel car carrier for South Korean shipping giant HMM.

The construction of the 10,800 CEU car carrier, which was jointly developed by GSI and Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute, began on February 12 with the groundbreaking ceremony.

The ship features LNG dual-fuel propulsion as well as ammonia- and methanol-ready capabilities. It is also equipped with an integrated exhaust gas recirculation technology (EGR), meeting the International Maritime Organization’s Tier III emission standards.

HMM placed an order for up to ten 10,800 CEU LNG dual fuel car carriers at the Chinese shipyard at the end of 2023.
